It's one of those deals in which the investigator keeps coming up with more and more evidence that he or she is the criminal. Not too much effort is put into explaining this. Something to do with "bad blood. There are a couple of ex-boy friends who know all her habits and might be responsible. Then there's Andy Garcia as a potentially new boy friend. Is he killing all her ex-lovers out of jealousy?

Is it someone whom she does not know but has been studying her habits? Is it a complete stranger? Is it really serial suicide in which several unrelated men first torture themselves with cigarettes and then pound their own faces to a pulp with some kind of martial arts wooden instrument that looks like a dildo?

I've made it sound kind of silly, but that's okay because it is. I like it as much as I do because it's more of a mystery than another boring action flick. There's a bit of the old ultra violence but only one shot is fired on film and, in fact, there aren't showers of gore and exploding fireballs as somebody's car rolls off the road.

I wish more effort had been put into pruning the mystery, into making it more logical, into filling in plot holes. Well -- two examples. One: Can a completely loony serial murderer turn his rage off for 15 or 20 years and then decide to turn it on again?

How does he manage to keep his job at the post office or wherever if he's so bonkers? Why doesn't his explanation of the murders make sense? That was all in the way of one example. Example Two: We find out that Ashley Judd couldn't have committed the murders because she'd been rendered unconscious by a drug someone put into her wine. Then how come she wakes up one morning after another victim has just been pounded to death and she finds she has a black eye and some blood on her?

How do you commit self-echymosis, especially when you're asleep? And why does the drug turn out to be a "date-rape" drug with a long name? And why is such emphasis placed on the fact? Why not just a plain old safe chloral hydrate cocktail? End of example two. I could go on but won't bother.

Man, this is a muddled story. I don't know how such a talented cast and director became involved in it -- or why Veronica Cartwright is reduced to a featured bit part so small that she is uncredited. By this point, Ashley Judd's crime-vehicles were starting to look alike and sound alike, which may be a reason "Twisted" did her career no favors.

She plays Jessica, a homicide inspector in San Francisco, new to the department, who apparently has attracted a stalker who's been killing off her myriad of sexual one-nighters after she's finished with them. Jessica, whose own father went on a killing spree before committing suicide, starts second-guessing her own erratic behavior and considers herself a suspect hint: passing out every night after gulping down Sangria is probably not a good idea when you're a homicide inspector.

By the minute mark, "Twisted", which is cobbled together from parts of "Sea of Love" and "Blue Steel", has assembled an inordinate amount of suspects, punctuated by bits of shady character exchanges--not to mention a police psychiatrist who sneaks up on Judd in the parking garage! Formula swill, but at least the picture looks good and it has a satisfying wrap-up. Judd over-compensates for her lackluster character by making lots of faces, and Andy Garcia overworks his adorableness as her new partner, yet both provide a reassuring presence in these surroundings and don't embarrass themselves.

Not so Samuel L. Jackson, who phones in his role as the police commissioner, nor director Philip Kaufman, who loads this scenario down with red herrings and still wants us to be surprised by the outcome.

It probably could have been a lot better, but as it was, it just dragged along without really capturing my interest. There wasn't a lot of insight into any of the characters, most especially Judd and Jackson's. Why, for instance, in this day and age, was she so promiscuous? The whole thing could have been fleshed out a little more. Anyway, I was disappointed. Right off the bat the cast list boasts weighty worth, giving us the promise of a dramatic thriller, filmed on location in Frisco, with misty lenses, lamp lights, waterside moods etc, it's set up a treat. As is the premise Ashley Judd stars as a newly promoted hot-shot police detective, who in quality noir traditions has a whole heap of problems going on.

Her family back story is shattering, she herself is heavily reliant on alcohol and she likes casual sex with strangers, strangers who start turning up dead, the kicker of which sees her basically investigating herself as a the prime suspect! Unfortunately with everything in place the pic never shifts out of first gear. The red herrings stack up, but nothing with any real conviction, and the whole premise starts to get monotonous, worse still the big reveal really isn't a surprise. There was a raft of these type of films in the 80s and 90s that were done much better, and on completion of viewing this effort one hankers for those pics - not to mention for the film noir of old!

Ashley Judd always frustrates, one can see a very good actress in her body of work, but she's more often than not starring in so so thrillers.

It can possibly be argued that her co-star Andy Garcia is a great actor who hasn't reached the heights he should have, the days of The Untouchables and Godfather III seeming to be fleeting glimpses of talent. Here he gets a thankless role that's poorly written, while both Samuel L. Jackson and David Strathairn add nice touches but aren't asked to extend themselves. Directed by Phillip Kaufman who as with Rising Sun, here also looks out of his comfort zone with the genre.
