Can the Ramblers Association raise awareness of its campaigns and causes to participants of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme? There is no immediate solution, but the bottom line is that the future of the Ramblers necessitates a future generation of keen walkers, after which the underlying values and campaigns of the group can be addressed. Let us battle with the appeal of the iPhone and Instagram, and encourage our youngsters to embrace the great outdoors, before it becomes too late.

The big question is how to attract younger people to join us on our walks, gain interest in our walking heritage and create the desire to continue the great work the Ramblers do? Whilst requiring thought, imagination and preparation, walk leaders could collaborate in planning and it would show children that entertainment does not only come from the screen of a tablet or phone.

Challenge them to be different. They would have a sense of doing something independently, with no pressure to converse with their elders, but with a sense of safe welcoming. They could even bring along their own friends. And I doubt there are many who cannot be stunned by the beauty of our Yorkshire landscape.

Future Ramblers membership depends on developing a passion for walking among younger generations. Otherwise, rambling as a pastime might really be on its last legs! I ts style belies its name, and always has done. This is not just a fellowship of bucolic codgers but a charitable countryside access group with a history, present and future bound up with passionate political activism. Though membership is slightly leaner than it once was — the organisation lost five thousand during the worst of the recession — it stands at ,, each individual belonging to one of nearly groups ranged across 50 regions.

To anyone noting the irony of its small administrative staff being located in deeply urban Vauxhall, London, it will reply that it is sited on the Thames long-distance footpath. In the increasingly crowded Britain of the postwar years, it is aware of the difference between an Act and the actuality. Add to this the overstretched and under-resourced local authority staff who are meant to enforce rights of way and you have the recipe for some classic rural encounters.

Since then we have helped coax, campaign and build Britain path-by-path into one of the most walking-friendly countries in the world. Walking is an easy, affordable and sociable form of exercise that can help you stay healthy, keep happy, enjoy time with friends and family or meet new people - all the while discovering new places right on your doorstep or exploring further afield.

Regular, brisk walking also has endless health benefits. It helps to control weight, combat osteoarthritis, can dramatically cut diabetes and cardiovascular disease and can reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, just to name a few.

There are lots of ways for people of all ages and abilities to get walking through the Ramblers. Joining one of our local walking groups offers the comfort and company of walking with others and the benefit of our experienced walk leaders.
